Daniel Johnson

Boys & Girls Clubs in Tennessee - 2021 Hall of Fame Inductee

Daniel Johnson

Daniel Johnson is a graduate of Greeneville High School where he was a golf standout earning All State and Regional Player of the Year honors. Daniel furthered his education and golf career at the University of Kentucky, while earning a degree in Finance and Marketing. Daniel received Academic All-SEC and Dean's List honors while playing golf for the Kentucky Wildcats. Daniel and his wife Vicky have two beautiful daughters Ally and Anna. Ally currently works as a youth development professional during the summers at the Boys & Girls Club.
Daniel helped start the regional Boys & Girls Club Olympics several years ago, when at a program meeting he stated he wanted to see our Club host a regional event for all the Clubs in East Tennessee. When told it might be costly, he said to get to work and he would find the funding. He was instrumental in getting ETSU to not only provide the Mini Dome for the event but in getting coaches and players from ETSU to help each year. Because of his efforts Clubs from Sevierville to Bristol meet in Johnson City each year. Daniel stated, “This event is for the kids to have a fun day of activities at a beautiful college campus with other children from around the region. Just having this fellowship with kids from other Boys & Girls Clubs and learning some sportsmanship, that’s all this is about.” Allowing a kid to be a kid- Daniel gets it!
At the end of 2013, Daniel rolled off the board after finishing his third term as board president and 14 years on the board to focus on his work endeavors. He was never more than a phone call away and continued to support our organization. When he left, we were working on a new site plan, but it never got any traction. In the fall of 2015 he asked to rejoin the board so that he could see us provide the building and services needed for our Boys & Girls Club to grow. He also offered to spearhead the efforts to get it done. Daniel rejoined the board and has been hard at work to put us in the position to break ground for a new Boys & Girls Club.
Daniel’s achievements are numerous and his impact on the overall success of our program is incomparable. Locally, Daniel has won our Board Member of the Year Award, the Club Care Award, the Community Service Award, the Director’s Award, the Leadership Award, the Extra Mile Award, the Fundraising Award several times, and the Rookie of the Year Award. In 2011, he was presented the Boys & Girls Clubs of America National Service to Youth Award and in 2018 was recognized by the Tennessee Area Council as the Tennessee Boys & Girls Club Board Member of the Year. And still, Daniel continues to put in work for our Club and kids because he truly has a heart for service. In 2019 he was named The Greeneville Sun/Youth Builders Overall winner for the Volunteer Spirit Award. In our community that is the highest award a volunteer can receive as only one is presented each year. Daniel is also a member of Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Jeremiah Milbank Society and has reached that standard for several years in a row.
Daniel is one of our most dedicated board members and his love for his community and giving back is unparalleled. Daniel has been active in other community organizations over the years such as the Greene County Adult Leadership Program, coaching children in Upward Basketball, the YMCA youth soccer program, the Greeneville High School soccer booster club, the Kiwanis Club of Greeneville, the American Cancer Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, First Baptist Church, and the list goes on and on. While he would never ask or expect to be recognized, I think it is easy to see from his lifelong acts of service that he epitomizes the volunteer spirit we all look for in a board member for his two decades of involvement with the Boys & Girls Club Movement. If you were to look up effective board member in the dictionary, Daniel Johnson's picture and actions would easily fill the description in full. He generously gives of his time, money and efforts. You do not have to ask him to help, he just does what he sees is needed. He does plenty behind the scenes and does not want credit for his efforts, just a nice safe place for kids to learn and grow into productive adults. Daniel has been a big part of our Boys & Girls Clubs' success, and his actions have set the tone for others to follow his lead. Daniel is the Managing Partner/Regional Director for Hudson Automotive Group that has dealerships throughout the southeast.
