Dr. Curtis Sexton

Boys & Girls Clubs in Tennessee - 2023 Hall of Fame Inductee

Dr. Curtis Sexton

Dr. Curtis C. Sexton was born the second of six children to Oswell and Rema Jeffers Sexton in Scott County, Tennessee. As a child, he was raised to serve God and value family, education, community, and country. He spent his long successful career achieving that. Dr. Sexton was a scholar-athlete while attending Huntsville High School, but graduated from Madisonville High School after the family moved to Madisonville during his senior year. He graduated from Tennessee Tech University in three years while studying pre-med classes and excelling in track and the high jump. He was the youngest in his class at UT Medical School in Memphis, Tennessee. He met his wife, Carol Jo Inman while attending medical school. They married in 1962 and moved to Columbia, South Carolina for his first year of residency. He worked in the emergency rooms while Carol was the head nurse in the mental health facility of the state hospital. After he completed his residency, Dr. Sexton joined the Air Force and moved his family to California where he worked as a physician on the Lompoc Air Force Base. After serving at Lompoc, Dr. Sexton returned to Tennessee in 1966, where he started his family practice in Lake City with Dr. John Burrell. He immediately became involved in the community. Through the years, he has served as a member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Anderson County Advisory Board, Anderson County Board of Education, Anderson County Election Commission, Anderson County Health Department Advisory Board, Anderson County Medical Services Advisory Board, Anderson County Chamber of Commerce, and Anderson County Schools Vocational Advisory Board – just to name a few! At the state level, he has served as a flight surgeon for the Tennessee National Guard, a member of the Tennessee State and Regional Health Council, and a member of the Tennessee Labor and Workforce Development Board. Supporting the youth of Anderson County has been one of Dr. Sexton’s passions. As a deacon and youth advocate at Main Street Baptist Church in Lake City, he was instrumental in planning summer mission trips for the Joy Singers, a county-wide youth group that performed concerts and conducted backyard Bible Clubs throughout the United States for almost twenty years. It was through his practice, community involvement, and church activities that Dr. Sexton, along with other leaders in the community, saw a need for an afterschool/youth enrichment program in Lake City. This group of volunteers formed the Cumberland Committee, which focused on providing life-changing opportunities for the youth of Lake City. The committee approached the Tennessee Valley organization about forming a Boys & Girls Club in Lake City. They suggested the Club be housed at Lake City Elementary School, where Club members would have access to educators and be located in one of the safest facilities for kids. In 2005, the Boys & Girls Club opened its blue doors to the youth of the community at Lake City Elementary School. Dr. Sexton has served as a member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Anderson County Advisory Board for over 18 years. The vision of Dr. Sexton and the Cumberland Committee has grown from a single school-based program at Lake City Elementary School to four Clubs serving over 300 kids per day in Lake City and Clinton, providing students with continued intervention after school. The first Club in Clinton opened in 2020, serving 60 kids, and was quickly followed by two additional Clubs opening within a year. A fifth program is expected to be launched in January 2024 and will involve a cooperative with Anderson County/Clinton City Government and Anderson County industry to offer affordable childcare for their employees. Since retiring from practice, Dr. Sexton continues to support the youth of Anderson County. Dr. Sexton has been inducted into the Boys & Girls Clubs of Anderson County Hall of Fame, has had the gymnasium at Lake City Middle School named in his honor, and has been recognized for his lifetime achievement to the community by the City of Rocky Top. Dr. Sexton still resides in Rocky Top with his wife Carol. He keeps busy with the activities of his six grown children, 15 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
