Boys & Girls Clubs in Tennessee - 2019 Hall of Fame Inductee

Dr. David Gordon

Dr. David W. Gordon was born on June 4, 1953 in Huntington, Tennessee as the 4th of 4 children. Prior to moving to Covington, Tennessee in 1961, he lived in Atwood and Parsons, Tennessee. Dr. Gordon graduated with honors from Covington High School in 1971 before beginning his college career at the University of Tennessee at Martin. In 1975, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology with high honors from the University of Tennessee at Martin as a third generation alumni. He then attended the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine, serving as President of the class for two out of three years, and graduating as a member of the inaugural class in 1979. Upon graduation he received two out of three awards given to graduating students for his classwork.
Following his graduation from Veterinary School, Dr. Gordon returned to Covington to begin his practice, start a family, and make his home. He raised three children in Covington, Cory, Jane, and Carly, all three of which attended public universities in Tennessee.
Dr. Gordon began his career in Covington focusing on faith and family. He was a member, deacon, and eventual elder of Central Christian Church in Covington. After 21 years in private practice, Dr. Gordon felt the call to serve his community as a public official. He was elected to serve a four year term as a Tipton County Commissioner in 2002, during which time he graduated from the TOTAL Leadership and WestStar Leadership Programs. His children affectionately called him Commissioner Gordon in honor of the Batman Comics character.
Following a move into the Covington city limits in 2003, Dr. Gordon ran for and won the position as the full-time Mayor of Covington. While serving as Mayor he was awarded the first annual University of Tennessee at Martin WestStar Leadership McWherter Outstanding Leadership Award, named after former Tennessee Governor Ned Ray McWherter and was the first mayor in the state to complete the Tennessee Certified Municipal Finance Officer program.
Despite this multitude of accomplishments, if you ask Dr. Gordon what he is most proud of (other than his children and granddaughter Emma) he would answer without hesitation- The Boys & Girls Club of the Hatchie River Region. Creating a safe space for the children of his community to learn, grow, and succeed became the cornerstone of his civic life. He is immeasurably proud to watch Tipton County children grow into the best they can be with the guiding help of the Boys & Girls Club. Through his tireless efforts, the Boys and Girls Club of the Hatchie River Region opened its doors on August 11, 2014. Dr. David Gordon is a founding member of the Boys & Girls Club of the Hatchie River Region and he also served as Board Chair.
